International conference dedicated to the British archaeologist Michael Vikers
Georgian National Museum invites you to the international conference, dedicated to the British archaeologist Professor Michael Vikers. Conference will take place at the Georgian National Museum Auditorium on 5th of September 2014, at 11:00 a.m.
Michael Vikers has wide range of research interests including Greek, Roman and Byzantine archaeology, History and Literature. He is Professor Emeritus of Archaeology at the University of Oxford, an Emeritus Fellow of Jesus College, and former Curator of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the Ashmolean (Oxford) Museum. He has also taught at University College, Dublin, the University of Libya in Benghazi, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has been a Visiting Member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and is a Corresponding Member of the German Archaeological Institute (1978), and Archaeological Institute of America. He is Dean of Degrees of Jesus College, Oxford.
Michael Vikers has close relations with Georgia. He was co-director of the joint British-Georgian expedition in Pichvnari, together with Amiran Kakhidze. He was regularly participating in the black sea symposiums dedicated to the Ancient History of Vani. From 2009 he is chairman of Pitt Rivers Annual symposium organized by Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. Besides, he was chairman of the "Friends of Academic Research in Georgia" in 2005-2010.Michael Vikers and his wife art critic Manana Odisheli are actively involved to the exposition and publishing activities of Georgian National Museum. Michael Vikers has granted his private library of more than 3500 books to the Georgian National Museum.
