The Georgian National Museum Tbilisi History Museum together with Goethe Institute Tbilisi and The Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (IFA) present exhibition of the famous painter Gerhard Richter. Opening event will take place on May 2nd 2007.
Gerhard Richter is an important artist in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Exhibition will showcase display 27 paintings.
He was born in Dresden in 1932. In 1961 he fled to Düsseldorf in West Germany. From 1961 to 1964, Richter studied at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
Richter began to see art as something that had to be separated from art history. He believed that paintings should focus on the image rather than the reference, the visual rather than the statement. He wanted to find a new way of painting that would not be constricting. Richter emerged from the group to become one of the most sought after contemporary artists in the world. His work is regularly sold at auction, sometimes for millions. During his life he was awarded several prices and awards : Praemium Imperiale, Japan, 1997 Wolf Prize, Wolf Foundation, Israel, 1994/5 Oskar Kokoschka Prize, Vienna, Austria, 1985 Arnold Bode Prize, Kassel, Germany, 1981 Junger Western Art Prize, Recklinghausen, Germany 1967.
Exhibition will last until May 19th.
