The Vani former city - one of the major sites of the Classical period - lies in western Georgia (Colchis of Classical authors), near the confluence of the Sulori with the Rioni (the Phasis of Graeco-Roman authors).

"Wine, Worship and Sacrifice: The Golden Graves of Ancient Vani" Opens Nov. 30 at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington DC.With more than 100 objects on view, the exhibition at the Sackler is a much expanded version of the exhibitions recently presented at three venues in Europe-in Berlin, Paris and Nice, France. After leaving the Sackler, the show will open as the inaugural exhibition at New York University's Institute for the Study of the Ancient World.

The Colchis treasure was transferred from Washington, DC to the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World in New York City. The inaugural exhibition opened on March 12, 2008.
