Museum Fest ◆ Through Unfamiliar

Date: 17 May 2019 – 21 May 2019

Museum: Tbilisi History Museum

In the framework of the Georgian National Museum Fest 2019, Tbilisi History Museum hosts the exhibition “Through Unfamiliar“, which presents three artists: Andrea Barzaghi, Mananiko Kobakhidze and Lorenzo Pingitore. They have left their natural habitat and engaged in the Italy-Georgia Artist Residency program, to explore a foreign country, an unknown city. They have undertaken this experience with their initial world view, with their cultural filters.

Andrea Barzaghi (b.1988, Italy) and Lorenzo Pingitore (b.1985, Italy) have lived and worked for one month in Tbilisi: their first time in Georgia. Mananiko Kobakhidze (b.1991, Georgia) also participated in the Artist In Rresidency Program in Italy. She had the opportunity to discover Turin. All of them looked at things, spaces, people. They asked questions and found some answers. They crossed the border of unfamiliar, and tried to recreate a temporary comfort zone, arranging things and experiences in their own artistic world.

The exhibition is realized within the frame of a Memorandum of cooperation, signed between the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic, to further enhance friendly relations and improve the prospects of cooperation between the two countries. Creative Georgia, the Italian Embassy in Tbilisi and IGAV, Italian organization promoting exchanges in contemporary art, are implementing the agreement through an annual program offering “Residences for young Georgian and Italian artists”.

The annual exchange program aims at creating possibilities to share and exchange creative impulses, providing the artists with the possibility to create and present their work in both countries. Georgian artists Mananiko Kobakhidze and Shotiko Aptsiauri have lived and worked in Turin, assisted by Istituto Garuzzo per le Arti Visive, in November 2018. Since end of April 2019, Italian artists Andrea Barzaghi and Lorenzo Pingitore have been working in Propaganda Network studios in Tbilisi, Georgia.

This exhibition, supported by the Georgian National Museum and Artinfo Georgia, showcases some preliminary results of their “unfamiliar experience”.
