MUSEUM FEST: MAGNUM PHOTO 70 - Robert Capa 1947, Thomas Dworzak 2017

Date: 19 May 2018 – 19 August 2018

Museum: Svaneti Museum

On May 15-30, due to the International Museum Day, we present the Georgian National Museum festival which is dedicated to the 100 years anniversary of the Democratic Republic of Georgia.

Within the frames of the festival, Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography will host an exhibition "MAGNUM PHOTO 70 - Georgian Journal: Robert Capa 1947, Thomas Dworzak 2017".

In 2017, MAGNUM PHOTOS - world's first association of photographs, celebrates 70 years anniversary since its establishment. Also 70 years have passed since the journey of MAGNUM PHOTOS founder, famous war photographer Robert Capa and American writer, Nobel laureate John Steinbeck who crossed three countries of the Soviet Union - Russia, Ukraine and Georgia.

In 1947, Robert Capa and noted American author John Steinbeck produced an eyewitness account of their travels through the Soviet Union during the early years of the Cold War era. They set out with the intent to record the real attitudes and modes of existence of people living under Soviet rule. The material created through the journey - introducing to the world the life of the exotic "Soviet man", was later published in „New York Herald Tribune" and „Ladies Home Journal". John Steinbeck's book "Russian Journal" was also published with the accompanying photos taken by Robert Capa.

To celebrate the anniversary, the Magnum Photos agency decided to recreate this journey through a modern project with the participation of the contemporary photographer and writer who will embark on Capa's and Steinbeck's voyage 70 years after the original journey depicting the life of individuals residing today in the same area.

The project is participated by one of the most well versed experts photographer of the post-Soviet area Thomas Dworzak and famous British journalist Julius Strauss, who earlier served as „Telegraph" Moscow bureau chief and covered the conflicts as foreign correspondent in Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

In September 2017, Georgia hosted the photo-exhibition in the framework of the new project "Russian Journal Revisited". The project was represented by MAGNUM PHOTOS and TBC Bank. Later, in November-December 2017, the project presentations were held in London and New York.

This time, Svaneti Museum will present the photos from the journey Robert Capa (1947) and Thomas Dworzak (2017) - Georgian parts.

It's noteworthy that this exhibition will enhance the collection of Robert Capa, conserved by Georgian National Museum specialists, with the support of TBC Bank.
