"Returned Masterpieces”

Georgian National Museum Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts invites you at the opening of the exhibition "Returned Masterpieces". Opening event will take place on 17th  of December 2005 at 3 p.m.

Exhibition will showcase artwork of German painter Lucas Cranach (1472-1553) "Matchmaker" together with Dutch painter Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-1682) "Landscape Waterfall". These two masterpieces were stolen from Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts in 1994.

After 10 years of investigation by the help of Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, stolen artworks were returned on 10th of May 2004.  Unfortunately masterpieces were heavily damaged.

By support of Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia together with Ministry of Sport and Georgian Embassy in Germany, "Matchmaker" by Lucas Cranach and "Landscape Waterfall" of Jacob van Ruisdael were sent for restoration work in Hamburg in 2005.

By the help of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany, director of Hamburger Kunsthalle Mr. Uwe Schneider and RAVE scholarship masterpieces were restored.

Educational program was prepared especially for the event.
